Queen Amidala FAQ

I was sick of all the questions being asked about Queen Amidala, over and over again. So I made a list of them, and put them here. As I get more Questions they will be added. The current version of the Queen Amidala FAQ is v.2.1
 

Who is Queen Amidala?
The elected leader of Naboo, Queen Amidala rules from the city of Theed. Deeply committed to her people, she hopes to achieve a nonviolent resolution in the face of the Trade Federation's invasion. (WW p.24) She would rule Naboo for two terms, and most importantly through the Trade federation’s blockade of the planet.

Who is Padme Naberrie?
Introduced as Queen Amidala's most trusted handmaiden, Padme joins the Queen, Captain Panaka, Ric Olie, Jar Jar Binks and the two Jedi in their flight from Naboo. (WW p.38) Padme Naberrie is the name Queen Amidala goes by when she is disguised as a handmaiden.

Who is Senator Padme?
Introduced in AOTC, Queen Amidala is the Senator for Naboo and goes by the name of Padme. In the credits no last name is given. In the books she is called Senator Padme Amidala.

What is the Queen's Full Name?
The Queen uses the name Padme and Amidala as a Senator in AOTC, so it would appear that Padme is her real first name, however in the credits no last name is given, so we still do not know for sure.

Who is the Queen's Decoy?
The Queen's handmaiden Sabe played decoy for the Queen when it's needed. She served as the Decoy during the blockaid by the Trade Federation.  

Who is the Senator Decoy?
Corde plays decoy for Senator Padme while travelling to Coruscant to vote on the creation of an Army of the Republic.

Who is Sabe?
The Queen's most trusted and loyal body guard, and her best friend.

Is Queen Amidala a Clone?
No Queen Amidala is not a clone.

Who are Queen Amidala’s other Handmaids?
The Handmaidens are Yane, Sache, Rabe, & Eirtae.

What do the Handmaids do?
intelligence, and are highly trained in defense. They would give their lives for the Queen and for Naboo. (QAJ p.15) They are loyal bodyguards. (TPMN)

Tell me more about Queen Amidala’s Handmaids.
Yane & Sache: They are the youngest handmaids and are left behind on Naboo with Sio Bibble, when the Queen leaves Naboo to appeal to the Senate.(VD)
Rabe: She does the Queens hairstyles. (VD)
Eirtae: She is rich and comes from a river valley, and knows lots about protocol, and helps the queen and the other maids with protocol.(VD)
Sabe: One of the Queen's most trusted and loyal handmaid and bodyguard. She will dress up and pretend to be the Queen as a Decoy when there may be trouble for Queen Amidala. She is also the Queen's best friend. She is asked to act as the Queen's Decoy during the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo. (QAJ p.15) Amidala and Sabe practice indirect communication in private, making a game of speaking in cryptic ways. This practice makes it easier for Amidala to guide Sabe's actions as Queen. (VD p.28)
 

If Queen Amidala is Padme. And Sabe is playing the Queen. Why did Sabe send Padme(Queen Amidala) to clean R2D2
She sent Padme to clean the R2 unit because she wanted to keep Padme's disguise complete. She had to give Padme orders just like the rest of the handmaids. Padme does remark that she also thinks Sabe enjoyed ordering her to clean the droid. (QAJ p.28) There is no information to support the following, but it's also guessed that Sabe sends Padme to clean R2, more so to reposition her in the room, so she can more clearly communicate with her during the meeting with Panaka, & Qui-gon about landing on Tatooine. When is it Queen Amidala vs her Handmaid Sabe disguised as the Queen?
The Queen's Handmaid (Sabe) disguises as the Queen when there is danger to the Queen. Usually only when the Queen is travelling. (QAJ) Also the handmaid Sabe has shorter darker hair (atleast in the movie) and why when Sabe is disguised as the Queen her hair is covered up. Such as in the Black Spider Webbing Dress. (TPM)

I'm Still confused on this whole Queen vs Decoy thing? (Scene by Scene)

I swear it's Amidala/Padme as the Queen boarding the Ship on Corsucant. Isn't it her?
No, it is not Amidala. It is her handmaid Sabe again pretending to be the Queen. It is covered in Amidala's Journal p.84. Basically if the Queen is outside where she could be shot at or attacked it is Sabe playing decoy. Remember the Queen's attacker (Darth Maul) is still around, so the Queen is still in danger. "When travelling it is not safe for me to be the Queen". (QAJ p.84-87) In the Illistrated script it clearly says that upon boarding the ship there is The Queen, Eterie, Rabe and Padme. Therefore Sabe must be The Queen at this time. (ISP) Also in AOTC Amidala has a decoy then as well for boarding/exiting the ship.

If the Jedi where sent secretly, how does the Queen know about them?
She spoke with Chancellor Valorum and blamed him for her starving people. The guilt caused him to tell her about the Jedi Ambassadors he sent to the Trade Federation. (QAJ p.6) It was public knowledge that Ambassadors were sent, the part that wasn't public knowledge was that the Ambassadors sent were Jedi Knights.

How did the fake Queen know to leave Naboo from Padme's comment: "We are brave."?
The fake Queen(Sabe) didn't know what to do or say, so she looked to Padme with eyes pleading for help. Padme's eyes told her that yes we must go. (QAJ p.23&24) Amidala and Sabe practice indirect communication in private, making a game of speaking in cryptic ways. This practice makes it easier for Amidala to guide Sabe's actions as Queen. (VD p.25)

Why does Panaka stay with Palpatine on Corsucant?
Queen Amidala asked him to, so he could report any news from the Senate to her immediately. (TPMN)

Who are all those other people in the Council room on Naboo?
Clockwise from Queen Amidala.
Sio Bibble: Governor of Naboo, he oversees all matters brought to the Queen's attention. He also chairs the Advisory Council, and deals directly with regional representatives and town governing officials in day-to-day administration. (VD p.30)
Graf Zapalo: Master of Sciences (VD p.30)
Lufta Shif: Education Regent (VD p.30)
Unknown Male: Unknown?
Hela Brandes: Music Advisor (VD p.30)
Captain Panaka: Head of Security for Queen Amidala. He oversees every branch of the volunteer Royal Naboo Security Forces and is personally responsible for the Queen's safety. (VD p.30)

How can a Queen be Elected?
Amidala is Elected to the position and Queen is just the title of who ever is the head leader of Naboo. If the head leader of the Naboo was male he would be called King of Naboo. (King or Queen is used as Americans would use President, or the British's title Prime Minister). (QAJ p.7)

Who ruled Naboo before Queen Amidala?
King Veruna ruled Naboo for 13 years. (QAJ p.7, VD P.24)

What happened to King Veruna?
After Queen Amidala was elected, King Veruna is now farming rocks in the Naboo Wasteland or so Amidala knows/believes. (QAJ p.8) King Veruna is died, but his death was covered up, and currently it doesn't appear that Amidala knows about this. (VD)

What happened to Queen Amidala's Parents, are they dead?
Her parents are still alive. In the journal she is upset that her friends, her parents would be herded into camps. They are simple farmers on Naboo. The farm is a green field dotted with yellow flowers.(QAJ p.7&23&72) She mentions her parents again in AOTC.

Does the Queen have any siblings?
Yes, she has an older sister Sola. Sola has two daughters Ryoo & Pooja (it is unclear at this time if the daughters are twins).

How did Queen Amidala get elected at the age of 14?
On Naboo they elect their rulers democratically. At first when Amidala announced her intentions to run, people scoffed. They ignored the fact that from an early age, Queen Amidala had been trained by the best teachers on Naboo. They ignored the fact that she had served as ruler of Theed for two years, and could best King Veruna in any debate. She traveled the cities and towns of Naboo, speaking and listening. The people gave her their trust, and began to brag about her age instead of mocking her. King Veruna was ousted and she was elected by an overwhelming majority. (QAJ p.7) Amidala is not the youngest Queen Naboo has ever had.

If Queen Amidala ruled Theed for the last two years, who rules Theed now?
Governor Sio Bibble. (TPMN, QAJ) Governor of Theed, the forthright Sio Bibble remains on Naboo during the Trade Federation's occupation of the planet. (WW p.28)

What is Theed
Theed is the capital city of the planet Naboo.

Who trained Queen Amidala in Self Defense?
Captain Panaka. (TPMN) Dedicated to the safety of Queen Amidala, Captain Panaka heads the Naboo Royal Security Forces. Knowing his small team cannot defend against a planetary assault, Panaka agrees to accompnay the Queen to Coruscant, where she can appeal to the Galatic Senate. (WW p.31)

Who trained Queen Amidala to be a ruler?
She was trained by the best teachers on Naboo, and her grandmother Winima. (QAJ p.7&42)

Who is Winima?
Queen Amidala's grandmother (from her father's side). Queen Amidala stayed with Winima in Theed, and learned a lot from her. Winima died one year before the blockade of Naboo. (QAJ p.42)

Did Palpatine help in the election of Queen Amidala?
It is unknown at this time, however it mention in the Journal that she never met Palpatine, and that Palpatine has spent the last several years on Coruscant which would lead one to believe he doesn't deal in the local pollitics much. I would guess he would have prefered to work with the corrupt King Veruna. (AFS)

Did Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan know of the Queen's Decoy?
When Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan first meet the Queen it is already Sabe playing the decoy. There is no mention of them being informed of the switch. The only time they speak to Amidala as the Queen before she reveils herself is aboard her ship when she asks for help of JarJar. In CBTPM, Qui-Gon makes several comments about Padme being the Queen's spoiled favorite handmaiden. He also does notice that the Queen is unsure of leaving Naboo until Padme speaks, and then she looses all her doubts. (CBTPM)

How long was Amidala Queen of Naboo?
Two terms, however her people wished that she would serve longer. (AOTC)

Who became Queen after Amidala?
Queen Jamillia is the current Queen of Naboo. (AOTC)

Is there to be any romance between Amidala and Obi-Wan?
There is some illusions to it in the books. (In Queen Amidala's Journals there is a scene where he comforts her about Qui-Gon's death. She then insists he join her for the victory celebration.) Obi-wan will be apx. 35 years old in Episode II, and 11 years older then the Queen, where the Queen is 5 years older then Anakin, so it is a possibility. (AFS) However nothing happens between them in AOTC and nothing is likely to happen.

How does Queen Amidala die?
It is unknow how Queen Amidala will/does die. Assuming that Queen Amidala is Luke & Leia's mother, Leia mention in ROTJ that her mother died when she was very young. That she was very beautiful but sad. (ROTJ)

Is Queen Amidala a Jedi or atleast force sensitive?
She is not a Jedi. However there is lots of evidence to support that she is atleast force sensitive. In ROTJ Yoda says the Force is strong in Luke's family, which would could mean his whole family, mother and father. (ROTJ) If Queen Amidala is force sensitive this also may explains why or how she was elected at such a young age. (TPM, TPMN, QAJ) In AOTCGN Padme mentions that when Anakin looks at her, she can read his thoughts, Anakin teases her about being force sensative. Yoda also comments that the force is strong in Amidala in Palpatine's chambers on Corsucant. (AOTC)

What is a Trooshti?
A Trooshti look like a combination dragonfly and phonex. They are the size of a large dragonfly and have two sets of wings much like a dragonfly, they also have 6 insect like legs. Their bodys are covered in a yellow and orange fur, and they have red eyes. The have a head like a bird with a beak like snout, and a pair of antenna. They have two body segements, the first have one set of legs/arms, the second segement having the back two pair of legs. The Trooshti also have long tails 3 times the length of the rest of their body. They also have a small amount of intellegence. (QACB)

What other scenes of Queen Amidala's are mentioned in the books but not shown in the movie?
In Queen Amidala's Journal she talks about giving the amulet to Sabe in her chambers. There is also mention of Amidala talking to Chancallor Vallurium before the Jedi are sent. In the Novel by Terry Brooks they mention the Destroyer Droids pounding at the Throne Room Doors while Amidala discusses a new treaty with the Viceroy. There is also a short conversation with Anakin and Padme on Naboo as they leave the starship into the swamp. In the Amidala comic book by Dark Horse Comics there is a conversation that she has with Anakin on the way to the pod race, a whole scene of her, JarJar and a Trooshti, and another short conversation with Anakin before the pod race. There is short scene in the Qui-Gon comic book by Dark Horse where Qui-Gon tells Padme, that Anakin was racing to more then race, but he was also racing for a person. Padme asks who, and Qui-gon suggests that she should check a mirror. There is another scene in Queen Amidala's Journal where Amidala talks with Obi-wan about Qui-Gon's death. There are so many missing and cut scenes of Amidala, and you should try to read them to really get a better understanding of the character.
 

What about Queen Amidala having a boyfriend on Naboo?
In Tales #2 there is as story about Amidala based at the time of her running for election to the position of Queen. King Veron's son falls in love with Amidala, and they do end up seeing each other for a short time, until she becomes Queen and her work takes over. The son leaves the planet in hopes of forgetting about Amidala. (Tales2)

What other scenes of Senator Padme’s are mentioned in the books but not shown in the movie?
There are several scenes in the AOTC novel that are not in the movie. Padme talks with her sister for a short time. There is also a meeting with Captain Panaka in regards to her safety. When Padme first arrives to Coruscant she reveals she is not dead during a meeting of the Senate. (AOTCN)

What's up with the white face make-up?
It's part of tradition for the rulers of Naboo to wear. Queen Amidala also uses it because it gives her instant authority. (When she has the white make-up on, she is the Queen). (QAJ p.6&7, VD p.25)

What's up with the red lipstick mark on her lower lip?
It's called a scar of remembrance. The remembrance is of a time thousands of years earlier on Naboo when there was much suffering. This was before the Great Time of Peace. (QAJ p.7, VD p.25)

What's up with the red dots on the Queen's cheeks?
They are stylized beauty marks that display symmetry on her face. (VD p.25)

Did the former Rulers of Naboo wear make-up?
From the Journal it talks of the mark that splits her lower lip, it's a scar of remembrance and it is a ruling tradition, older then memory. The white make-up and red dots on the cheek appear to also be part of the official ceremonial robes. I would guess that the newly elected King or Queen would wear the tradition make-up atleast during their coronation, after which they may not have to wear the make-up. Queen Amidala wears the make-up out of respect for her predecessors, and to gain instant authority. So this does tell us that former rulers did wear the make-up at one time or another. It is unknown as to if King Veruna wore the Naboo make-up. (QAJ p.6&7) The new Queen of Naboo wears the white face make-up, scar of rememberance, and has the same beauty marks for symmetry.

What's up with the White Thumbnail polish?
It is the only tradition Amidala retains from her native village.(VD p.24)

Does the name Padme mean something?
Padma is Sanskrit for Lotus, or In The Lotus. (AFS)

I would recommend buying the above books if you wish to learn more about Queen Amidala or TPM in general. I try to put up alot of information about Queen Amidala, but I do leave out alot of stuff that is in the books. I do this just so I don't get trouble with copyrights and so you have a reason to get the books.
